Homework on the Fire

Jennifer Lee, otherwise known as TOKiMONSTA, released her brand new EP ‘Creature Dreams’ this week on the notorious Brainfeeder label. Little Pleasures is one of my favourite songs off of the release, seven songs so rich in creativity and texture that it may well be one of the best Electronic releases this year. Little Pleasures features Gavin Turek on vocals, someone who I had previously not heard of, but she lends her dreamy vocals to two tracks on the Creature Dreams EP. This is one of my favourite songs off of the EP mainly because it just feels incredibly soulful. I am a sucker for this kind of down-tempo soul with a really prominent snare that makes me just want to bop my head slowly on every 2nd and 4th beat. There’s also that chorus. One thing that TOKiMONSTA possesses which perhaps a few Brainfeeder artists don’t is the ability to incorporate really catchy melodies into her music. This simply isn’t what a lot of other artists on the LA-based label revel in, such as Matthewdavid who relies far more on field recordings and sound-scapes, but the fact TOKiMONSTA doesn’t shy away from the melodies may be what makes this EP so fantastic. I highly recommend downloading this, a few other highlights include Bright Shadows and Darkest (Dim), the other song featuring Turek on vocals.
